The Yale School of Art is pleased to announce the opening of a newly refurbished undergraduate building at 53 Broadway, which officially opened to the community on September 19, 2025. Located in the former offices of Newman Architects, the building has been transformed into a newly refurbished facility to support the creative work of undergraduate art majors in their final year of study.
With over 7,000 square feet, the new building includes twenty-four individual studios designed for focused, independent work; an 800-square-foot classroom for instruction and group learning; a small critique space to foster dialogue and feedback; and faculty and staff offices to support mentorship and advising. The building will serve as a dedicated space for senior undergraduate majors to develop their studio practices, engage in critique, and participate in seminars and studio visits. 53 Broadway reflects the School of Art’s ongoing investment in undergraduate education and its belief in the importance of providing students with both the physical and intellectual space to grow as artists.
“This new art space will be a boon to Yale College Art majors, providing much needed dedicated studio space for a major that has grown in recent years,” Associate Dean for the Arts at Yale College, Kate Krier, shared. “The location is a win too, with the building situated next to the off-Broadway Theater in the heart of campus.”
This new facility was developed in response to the removal of 341 Crown Street, which was demolished to make way for the new dramatic arts building for the David Geffen School of Drama. With the significance the School of Art’s pedagogy places on studio-based work, ensuring continuity of studio access for undergraduate art majors was a driving force behind the project.
“Our undergraduate courses at the School of Art see high demand from Yale College. Each semester, there are approximately 500+ students who are left on waitlists,” remarked Stavros Niarchos Foundation Dean Kymberly Pinder about the significance of the space. “Thanks to the support of the University in the development of 53 Broadway, we will be able to provide dedicated studios for senior art majors and increase our capacity for undergraduate classes.”
Studios in 53 Broadway are already being assigned, and the School of Art looks forward to inviting students to activate the space this fall and beyond.
